Quellan Unveils Breakthrough Interconnect for Mega Data Centers

Industry's Thinnest, Lightest Active Cable Improves Cable Speed, Reach and Airflow to Revolutionize Next Generation Data Centers

 

Santa Clara, CA - DesignCon 2007, January 30, 2007 -- Quellan Incorporated, a leader in noise cancellation ICs, in collaboration with Leoni Industries, today announced the availability of the world's smallest gauge active cable for use in today's mega data centers. Embedding Quellan's Q:ACTIVE® components in each end of a passive cable boosts signals and reduces noise yielding a decrease in cable diameter by 70% while increasing cable reach up to three times that of traditional passive cabling.

With passive cables, the propagating data is attenuated and distorted; a problem compounded with higher data rates and smaller gauge cabling. With Quellan's Q:ACTIVE technology embedded inside connectors, the impairments are removed and cabling can now run 3 to 4 times farther, and operate at 1/3 the diameter of current cabling options.

Mega data centers currently utilize interconnect conduits that reach 12 feet in diameter and weigh as much as 3 tons. Quellan's Q:ACTIVE reduces the weight of these conduits to just a fraction of existing deployments. This results in dramatically increased air flow, lower overall power consumption and greater density in the data center.

 

"Today's data center cabling clusters are exceeding three tons in weight and plugging 10 foot diameter conduits - reducing reliability and blocking critical airflow," said Tony Stelliga, Quellan's CEO. "Our Q:ACTIVE technology will reduce weight and area by two-thirds - yielding a low-cost, lower energy solution to this growing problem."

 

Quellan will demonstrate it's Q:ACTIVE technology for both 10 Gigabit Ethernet, CX4 and Double Data Rate Infiniband at booth 112. This proprietary analog technology includes SAS, PCI-Express, and Fibre Channel applications. Also featured is Quellan's paper presentation on Reach-Gauge Tradeoffs in Copper Cable Interconnects, selected as an award finalist by the DesignCon Technical Committee.
